Pradaxa, also known as Dabigatran, is a blood thinner from the class of direct thrombin inhibitors. It was released to the American public in October 2010.Pradaxa is approved to prevent blood clots in patients with Atrial fibrillation not caused by heart valve disease and at least one other risk factor for stroke.
Pradaxa is used as an alternative to the blood thinner Warfarin. Warfarin has been used to prevent blood clots in patients at a higher risk for stroke since 1954.
Warfarin is a very effective blood thinner, but many common medicines and foods change the amount of Warfarin in a patient’s blood. Pradaxa does not have many interactions with common foods and medicines, so Pradaxa patients do not have to get weekly blood test. This makes Pradaxa a more convenient blood thinner. However, switching to Pradaxa has been a fatal choice for many patients since its release in October 2010.
Blood thinners make it more difficult for the blood to clot. This is good for preventing strokes, but can also interfere with the body’s natural response to injuries. If a patient taking blood thinners gets injured, they may bleed uncontrollably. There is no cure for Pradaxa patients who bleed uncontrollably. Doctors are powerless to help: nobody knows how to neutralize Pradaxa, and over 500 Pradaxa patients have bled to death as a result.
To compound the problem, Pradaxa is available in only one dose. This means that patients who are more likely to experience adverse effects like kidney failure and excessive bleeding have to take the same dosage as lower-risk patients.
Pradaxa also causes significant heart problems. Two large multi-study reviews comparing Pradaxa to other blood thinners have found that Pradaxa increases the risk of heart attack as much as 33% in patients with atrial fibrillation.
If you or a loved one experienced excessive bleeding are a heart issue will on Pradaxa, you should know that you have options. You do not have to bear the emotional and financial burden or recovering from a serious injury or the death of a family member alone.
